Umar Khan Jadoon

Hi! I am a web-designer/programmer currently based in Stockholm! Designing and coding for the web is my passion. My main skills include the following:

  • Developing web apps using the CakePHP framework.
  • Developing databases for CakePHP apps with MySQL.
  • Creating mockups in Adobe Photoshop or Inkscape
  • Converting Inkscape/Photoshop mockups to XHTML/CSS
  • Adding AJAX based interactivity to a page using the jQuery framework.
  • Managing a Linux server

I mainly work with open source technologies for my development and am efficient with all 3 major platforms which include the Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.

Skill Level

I work with a lot of different tools and languages, so I decided to quickly summarize the tools I work with as a designer and a coder in the figure below.

I have also worked extensively with game engine modification as a hobby and have worked with the Half Life game engine as well as with the Farcry game engine. The screenshot below is from the Driving Test Simulator engine modification for Farcry which I made back in 2005-2006.

The modification featured enhancements like bloom lighting,weather effects, single map day/evening/night transitions, pedestrians, A.I. traffic, hud signs, speed limits, action monitoring etc.

Experience

DocumentaryBase AB (Dec 2008 - Present)

Programmer/Web Designer

The assigned duties at DocumentaryBase AB included managing the website FactualTV, taking part in the process of converting the technology's platform from Java to PHP, creating the DVD package pages, converting the template mockup to XHTML/CSS, and ensuring cross browser compatibility. Other duties included creating a DVD cover printing software programmed entirely in PHP and jQuery to help print covers dynamically for any ordered DVD.

Side projects included the creation of Strukturerade Produkter website. This project included the complete XHTML/CSS creation for the website from the mockups created in Inkscape. The CSS framework used for this project was the Google Blueprint Framework to ensure a consistent look over the different available browsers. The entire platform was built using the CakePHP framework which is based on MVC (Model View Controller) principles built on top of PHP and MySQL. The development with CakePHP ensured a modular system which can easily be modified and extended over time. The system also includes a complete administration system which gives the administrator complete control of the information presented on the website without having to touch any code. The website also features extensive usage of jQuery for AJAX form submission, overlays, interface elements and form validation. FlowPlayer was used to display the introductory video on the website and the site also features RSS feeds, valid XML sitemaps and information scraping capability.

Other upcoming projects include projects for Golf.se and Di.se and the launching of a new rental video service called PromoPlay.

Freelancing Oct 2007 - Oct 2008

During this period I worked as a freelancer for Kick Solutions NY. I mainly worked with the Joomla Content Management System during this period. My duties included installing Joomla on different web servers, modifying XHTML Joomla templates to the customer's needs as well as adding/removing and customizing custom Joomla modules to increase the functionality of websites.

During this time, I created many websites with the Joomla CMS including East Meadow Karate, NyPoolfence, JustPoolfences and Renovareclinic .

COMSATS University Abbottabad Campus Jan 2007 - Aug 2007

I served as a graphics designer/web developer for COMSATS Institute of Information Technology's Abbottabad campus . During this period I was assigned various duties including the creation of different websites for the university as well as designing print media.

I was also an active member of the organizers for various events including the FIT (Frontiers of Inoformation Technology) conference held annually in Pakistan by COMSATS.
